모스크바의 신사 

 

는 Alexander Ilyich Rostov 백작이다. 

 

 

부유한 집안 출신의 주인공이 '사회의 기생충'으로 찍혀 종신 구금형을 받고 모스크바에 있는 Metropol 호텔에서 지내게 된다. 

호화로운 방에서 묵었던 그는 이제 비좁은 하인방을 쓴다.

 

이런 상황에서도 의연하고 초연한 태도를 유지하는, 마치 득도한 듯한 백작... 

책을 읽는 내내 나타나는 그의 행동과 말에서는 교양, 품위, 폭넓은 지식이 보인다.

 

The count took pride in wearing a well-tailored jacket; but he took greater pride in knowing that a gentleman's presence was best announced by his bearing, his remarks, and his manners. Not by the cut of his coat. (36p)

백작은 몸에 맞게 재단된 재킷을 입는다는 것에 자부심을 느꼈지만, 신사의 존재감은 코트 핏이 아니라 그 사람의 자세와 언행, 매너를 통해 가장 잘 드러난다는 사실을 안다는 데 더 큰 자부심을 느꼈다. 

 

 

By their very nature, human beings are so capricious, so complex, so delightfully contradictory, that they deserve not only our consideration, but our reconsideration - and our unwavering determination to withhold our opinion until we have engaged with them in every possible setting at every possible hour. (120p)

인간은 본질적으로 너무나도 변덕스럽고, 복잡하고, 유쾌할 정도로 모순적이기 때문에 한 인간을 한 번에 판단할 것이 아니라 재판단하는 것이 마땅하며, 한 인간을 매순간 모든 환경에서 바라보기 전까지는 그 사람에 대한 판단을 한결같이 보류해야 한다.

 

 

Metropol 호텔에서 일종의 루틴을 지키며 살아가는 주인공이

지배인, 셰프, 투숙객부터 여배우, 소녀, 시인, 왕자, 대령 등 각계 각층의 사람들을 만나며 펼쳐지는 이야기다. 

 

소설의 배경

나는 초반부터 이 백작이 마음에 들었는데,

넓은 호텔방에서 비좁은 방으로 옮기게 되어 여러 가구를 버려야 하는 장면에서 '책은 하나도 버리지 않았기' 때문이다.

'This. That. Those. All the books."  

 

 

압권은 단연 후반부의 Apotheoses 장이다.

그 직전에는 주인공이 갑자기 왜이러나 했는데 다 계획이 있었구나!

 

쇼생크 탈출을 봤을 때의 기분이다.

 

 

안 그래도 이 소설이 드라마로 제작된다고 한다.

For it is a fact that a man can be profoundly out of step with his times. A man may have been born in a city famous for its idiosyncratic culture and yet, the very habits, fashions, and ideas that exalt that city in the eyes of the world may make no sense to him at all. All he proceeds through life, he looks about in a state of confusion, understanding neither the inclinations nor the aspirations of his peers. (86p)

실제로 사람은 자신이 살고 있는 시대로부터 완전히 벗어나 있을 수 있다. 고유한 문화로 알려진 도시에 태어난 사람이라 하더라도, 온 세상이 그 도시를 특별하다고 칭송하는 습관과 방식, 생각이 그에게는 도저히 이해가 되지 않을 수 있는 것이다. 그는 평생 혼란의 상태로 세상을 바라보면서, 주변 사람들의 의도나 야망을 이해하지 못한 채 살아간다. 

 

 

A careful accounting of days allows the isolated to note that another year of hardship has been endured; survived; bested. Whether they have found the strength to persevere through a tireless determination or some foolhardy optimism, those 365 hatch marks stand as proof of their indomitability. For after all, if attentiveness should be measured in minutes and discipline measured in hours, then indomitability must be measured in years. (109~110p) 

하루하루를 조심스럽게 세며 지내는 고립된 사람은 또다른 역경의 한 해를 견뎠고, 살아냈고, 이겨냈다는 것을 깨닫게 된다. 지칠 줄 모르는 결단을 통해 인내할 힘을 찾았든, 이따금 무모한 낙관을 지나왔든, 365일이라는 기준은 그 사람이 가진 불굴의 오기를 입증해준다. 결국 집중력은 분마다 측정하고, 규율은 시간마나 측정하고, 불굴의 오기는 해마다 측정해야 하는 것이기 때문이다.

For what matters in life is not whether we receive a round of applause; what matters is whether we have the courage to venture forth despite the uncertainty to acclaim. (387~388p)

인생에서 중요한 것은 우리가 큰 박수를 받았는지에 달려있지 않다. 중요한 것은 환호를 받게 될지 아닐지가 불확실함에도 불구하고 모험을 할 용기를 가지고 있냐는 것이다. 

 

 

As much as we hate to admit the fact, Fate does not take sides. It is fairminded and generally prefers to maintain some balance between the likelihood of success and failure in all our endeavors. (428p) 

정말 인정하기 싫은 사실이지만, 운명은 한쪽 편을 들지 않는다. 운명은 공평해서 우리가 모든 노력을 다 기울여도 성공과 실패의 가능성 사이에 어느 정도 균형을 유지하는 것을 대체로 선호한다.
